Maybe it’s because growing up I spent a lot of time in the countryside, but the thought of living somewhere relatively isolated really appeals to me. Whilst studying for my degree I came across the island of North Ronaldsay, with a population of 72 (Census, 2011). Whilst it’s a lovely island, I would miss a river, and not be a fan of the windy cold weather. However, I have recently discovered the secluded town of Darwin, California.
Darwin, California is located around 160 miles from Los Angeles, and 135 miles from Las Vegas, on the edge of Death Valley. As of the 2020 US Census, Darwin had a population of 36, down from 43 in 2010. However, in its early days, the town had a population of hundreds.
America’s Lawless Town
Interesting Town
While Darwin is a very interesting town with an even more interesting history, I don’t think it’s a place where I could ever live. While I like the idea of being relatively isolated with a lot of land, the terrain and lack of greenery I would find difficult. Far more accustomed to greenfield, woodland, rivers, and waterfall.
The secluded town of Darwin, California is certainly on my ‘to visit list’ though.
